Small museums, historical organizations, and libraries with local history collections face many challenges in their mission of preserving historical records and artifacts and sharing local history with their communities. Through a collaboration with the Federation of North Carolina Historical Socities, the Hometown History workshop series is designed to help those institutions with practical issues in the preservation and interpretation of local history.

Past workshop topics have included developing a collection policy; preserving and providing access to local history materials; developing a living history program; creating attractive exhibits on a budget; grant writing; developing standards for visitor services; tips for improving publicity; publishing local history; developing a volunteer policy; and more.
