Map of North Carolina counties visited by NC ECHO

  o About the Survey

North Carolina ECHO is on the road. During the next few years, North Carolina ECHO staff will visit every cultural institution in the state that maintains a permanent collection of materials for research and/or exhibit purposes. This includes those large institutions with dozens of staff, as well as those repositories which are supported by a handful of faithful volunteers.

Project staff will interview the caretakers of North Carolina's treasures to determine type and extent of holdings, states of preservation and access, means of support, and types and amount of use. They will take photographs of the institutions and gather promotional and administrative documents. This survey, one of the most thorough and comprehensive ever attempted by a state, will allow North Carolina ECHO to better structure its program of continuing education, Web portal, and grant awards. It will also be an opportunity for local cultural caretakers to come together to discuss their shared challenges and opportunities, as survey staff will sponsor local "summary meetings," where results of the survey will be reported and concerns and feedback from those being surveyed will be sought.

During their visits, survey staff will also be available for consultation regarding basic arrangement, description, preservation, and access issues. They will also be able to direct local caretakers to other, more-specialized agencies, professional associations, and individuals.

For now, it's on to Camden and Clinton, Fair Bluff and Four Oaks, Laurinburg and Lincolnton, Sparta and Spruce Pine, and Madison, Mooresville, Murphy and Manteo. . .

Lisbeth C. Evans, Secretary, www.ncculture.com.

This innovative and collaborative project seeks to build a statewide framework for digitization in order to facilitate deep, wide, and comprehensive access to the holdings of North Carolina's cultural institutions.
